Ontario progress reports, Grades 1–8
From your notes to a strength and a next step, one student at a time.
The fall progress report is short, but it asks a lot of you in a few busy weeks. This page walks through what it asks for, and the free Progress Report Readiness Kit gives you pages for each student to sort your notes before you start writing comments.

When progress reports go home
Schools use the Elementary Progress Report Card between October 20 and November 20. Your school or board sets its own due date inside that window, so the kit's workback checklist starts from the date you write in.
Your due date is set by your school or board, somewhere in this window.
What the fall progress report asks for
- Learning skills and work habits, reported first. Six skills: Responsibility, Organization, Independent Work, Collaboration, Initiative and Self-Regulation, each rated E (Excellent), G (Good), S (Satisfactory) or N (Needs Improvement). You evaluate them apart from subject achievement as far as you can, and in Grades 1–8 the homeroom teacher usually completes them.
- Subject progress, not marks. For each subject or strand you check Progressing With Difficulty, Progressing Well or Progressing Very Well, or NA if it hasn't been taught yet. Letter grades and percentage marks belong to the provincial report card, not this one.
- Strengths and next steps. Comments focus on what the student has learned, describe significant strengths and name next steps, in language parents understand, so they can support learning at home.
From evidence to a strength and a next step
Growing Success asks you to gather evidence over time from three sources: observations, conversations and student products. The kit turns that into one move per subject: write down what you've seen, pick one strength, pick one next step. The worked examples on pages 8 and 9 show how short those notes can be.

Strength: explains multiplication strategies using arrays.
Next step: use a drawing to check which of two fractions is larger.
What's in the kit

- Evidence → comment pages for Grades 1–6, and for Grades 7–8 with History and Geography
- A learning skills page: rate all six, then pick three to write about
- Two worked examples, for subjects and for learning skills

How to use it, one student at a time:
- On paper: for each student, print page 4 (or 5–6) and page 7.
- As a PDF: for each student, save a copy of the fillable PDF named with their initials, then type in it. In Preview, choose File > Duplicate. In Adobe Acrobat, choose File > Save As.
- In Google Docs: for each student, make a copy of the student pages. The link asks “Make a copy?” and puts the copy in your own Drive.
The kit and The Modern Teacher
The kit works one student at a time, on paper or in a PDF. The Modern Teacher keeps your whole class in your account: the class list, the evidence you track and the progress-report comments you draft.
- Core includes Class Lists, the Assessment Tracker, the Student Tracker and the Report Card Comment Builder, with 63,272 comments and next steps for Term 1, Term 2 and progress reports.
- Beyond and Vault include the Learning Skills Comment Builder, for all six learning skills.
- In-progress report card draft text stays in your account until you clear the comment or remove the student and that change finishes syncing.
The Modern Teacher is designed to keep student information limited. We recommend using first names or initials and reviewing any guidance your school or board provides for classroom digital tools.
Common questions
Is the kit free?
Yes. No email, no account, nothing to sign up for.
Does the kit save what I type?
Only in the PDF file you save on your own device. The kit collects nothing.
Does this replace my board's reporting system?
No. Your final comments still go into the system your school or board uses.
